With over 7000 inhabitants it is the smallest of the islands and is triangular in shape. It has vast rugged coastlines with steep cliffs reaching into the sea and with rugged outcrops of numerous extinct volcanic craters. One exception to this rugged landscape is the inlet of El Golfo with its forest features and more gentle slopes.

When driving in El Hierro be sure to make a visit to the capital Valverde that has just over 3600 inhabitants and is the largest human concentration on the island. You could also visit the wine region of Frontera and try out the local wine on offer.

If you are in to your water sports then you must visit the south of the Islands to take part in wind surfing, paragliding or deep sea or surface fishing which is on offer in the La Restinga region of El Hierro.

Other places of interest include the El Tamaduste with its natural poll of clear waters, which is believed to have medicinal properties, and people travel from all over Europe to visit the area specifically for this. You can also try the Tinor that lies on a Plateau and has an expansion of ashy like green fields.
